First kanji I learnt:
一、二、三
And that was about 20 years ago nearly. Imagine my surprise, when I learnt you can also write (and read) the same:
壱、弐、参
They are archaic, and apparently used in documents still. Should you have the occasion (or patience) to sit down and read some legal Japanese, you will no longer look like a [...]

骨 (こつ) kotu / kotsu

My student dropped this one in a lesson the other day: 英会話を聞く骨知りたい, said she. こつ? thought I. The bones of listening? No. The knack. “I want to know the knack of understanding what I hear.” I will add some examples later.
